Outage / site down.

The main router serving diddlefinger crashed on the evening of the 13th after an air-conditioning failure. This coincided with o-bon holidays.

The router is now being carefully monitored and a replacement router has been ordered.

In addition a new server to handle the diddlefinger domain has been ordered from Dell.

Until the new kit arrives and is installed, we may suffer occasional outages.

Our apologies for the downtime.

Glossary

A glossary of symbols has been created for diddlefinger / google maps. It may be accessed by clicking the "glossary" link that sits on the right side of the map. It does not include symbols for conbini (yet...) but everything else should be there. If you find a symbol we have not included, please let us know.

New map tiles.

Google updated the map tiles available through the maps api on the 8th of August. The new tiles generally have more detail, but many Japanese city name labels had their locations changed slightly. (These labels are baked in to the map tile graphics - we have no control over them.)

800 English language labels were moved by diddlefinger staff during the afternoon of 8th August to reflect the new positioning.

Possible server problems

The server on which diddlefinger runs is showing the early signs of possible problems. A new server is being ordered.

Diddlefinger Blog

This blog provides news and information about the status of the diddlefinger.com website. If diddlefinger goes down or has problems we will provide information here.

Diddlefinger allows one to look up addresses in Japan using English, then map them on a Japanese map, with at least some English labels.
